Bergen: Gingerbread Town

Should you find yourself in Bergen, Norway by the end of the year, there’s one attraction you should definitely not miss and that is Gingerbread Town.

Every Christmas since 1991, kindergartens, schools and businesses have contributed with their creative gingerbread baking to this exhibition. This year the number of contributions was over 2000! It’s hard not to be impressed when you enter the Sentralbadet (Central Bath) and see all the gingerbread houses, big and small, alongside the churches, boats, castles, a couple of Eiffel Towers, Ferris wheel and Tower Bridge.

Gingerbread Town, popular among the young and old of Bergen, is for many an annual tradition. You simply have to visit before Christmas. Perhaps you’d find some ideas for your own baking? This is not a visit to be rushed. Although the city is on a grand scale, it’s when you take time to look at the individual creations in detail, that you realize the amount of work that has contributed to this wonderful creation. Certainly a lot of tasting too!
